For a couple of years now, aerothermal energy has become one of the most advantageous options when replacing an old heating system such as gas or oil boilers, especially in constructions and renovations. In this publication, we will explain what aerothermal energy is, how it works, and what the difference is between monobloc and bibloc aerothermal systems.
For a couple of years now, aerothermal energy has become one of the most advantageous options when replacing an old heating system such as gas or oil boilers, especially in constructions and renovations. In this publication, we will explain what aerothermal energy is, how it works, and what the difference is between monobloc aerothermal energy and bibloc aerothermal energy.
Aerothermal energy is a technology that stands out for its energy efficiency and respect for the environment. The system harnesses the energy contained in the outside air to generate both heat and cold. In this way, aerothermal energy allows for the provision of heating, cooling, and domestic hot water.
This technology stands out for its high efficiency, as for every kilowatt of electricity consumed, between three and five kilowatts of heat can be generated. It has been shown to reduce the electricity bill by approximately 70%.

How does aerothermal energy work?

The system is based on a heat pump that extracts thermal energy from the air and transfers it to the home heating system.
In summary, aerothermal energy operates in the following three stages:
  1. Capturing outdoor air: The heat pump absorbs outdoor air through a heat exchanger.
  2. Compression and transfer: The captured heat is transferred to a refrigerant, which is compressed to increase its temperature.
  3. Heat distribution: The accumulated heat or cold is distributed through the heating/cooling system or the domestic hot water system.

Differences between bibloc and monobloc aerothermal systems

There are two types of aerothermal systems: bibloc and monobloc. Below we explain what they consist of and what their advantages and disadvantages are:

Bifunctional aerothermal energy

The bibloc aerothermal system consists of two separate units, one exterior and one interior. Both units are connected by pipes through which the refrigerant gas circulates.
Advantages:
  • Installation flexibility: Being two units, the outdoor one is smaller and can be installed as if it were an outdoor air conditioning unit.
  • Maintenance: In case of a breakdown, having two separate units makes them easier to repair.
Disadvantages:
  • Complex installation: The two units must be connected and the refrigerant gas must be handled.
  • Space: It is necessary to have space for each unit.

Monobloc aerothermal energy

The monobloc aerothermal system, unlike the bibloc, integrates all components into a single outdoor unit. This unit contains the refrigerant gas inside and does not require gas handling, only water handling.
Advantages:
  • Simple installation: The outdoor unit is only connected to the heating system without handling the refrigerant.
  • Space: The unit is larger, but since there is only one, only one space is needed.
  • Initial cost: The installation cost is usually lower than that of bibloc systems.
Disadvantages:
  • Energy efficiency may be lower since being outside can lead to heat loss.
  • Maintenance: Being a compact machine, repairs may be more difficult.

Which one should I choose?

The choice depends on considering different factors based on where and how it will be installed.
In apartments and buildings, we recommend installing a bibloc system, as the outdoor units are smaller and can be installed on a small balcony or patio. In contrast, for single-family homes or apartments with ample outdoor space, we recommend the monobloc system since the installation is simpler, the units are very powerful, and you will have a single unit for aerothermal energy.

Conclusion

Aerothermal energy represents an advanced and sustainable solution for heating and producing domestic hot water in the home. Both bibloc and monobloc systems have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice between them will depend on the specific circumstances of each installation. Whatever your choice, aerothermal energy will allow you to enjoy a comfortable and efficient home, while also contributing to environmental protection.
